Instructor: Lynn Guier If you love to draw, this class is for you! We will listen to inspiring stories and poetry, and create works of art. Develop and enhance your understanding of basic techniques including line, light and shadow, color and texture. Explore the color wheel using different media: pastels, crayon, colored pencil, ink and pencil. Most of all, we’ll have fun drawing! All levels welcome. Min/max: 5 to 12 $35

Photography Techniques (ages 13-18) Instructor: Marsha Lutz This class is for beginning photographers using either film or digital cameras, who wish to gain an understanding of photographing in manual mode. Students will need to have a camera equipped with manual settings and an interchangeable lens (SLR). We'll learn the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography, including f-stops, shutter speeds, lighting and the basics of composition. Bring your camera. Min/max: 4 to 6 $35
Instructor: Lynn Guier Like to draw? Want to learn to draw well? Learn in a relaxed setting with a professional illustrator / designer. Open to all skill levels, novice to advanced. No experience required. This is individualized instruction in a group setting. Work on illustrating posters, album covers, in a journal, and more. We will explore drawing, painting, clay, sculpture, printmaking and more. All supplies are included. Parents are encouraged (and required for 6 year-olds) to come in and help. ADULT CLASSES Session I 2010-11 The Business of Art Mondays, 1-3 pm Instructor: Kristie Sherrodd This five-part series is designed to provide artisans with information and business skills needed to take the products of their creative endeavors into the marketplace. Topics include business decisions (structure, hobby versus business, names, business requirements), customers and your market, pricing and selling, packaging and labeling, and working with social and fashion trends. This series is sponsored in part by the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Min/max: 4 to 16. Free to Arts Alliance members ($30/year minimum). This class is for participants that want to paint expressively in both soft pastel and oil pastel. You will learn about the exciting Post-Impressionist concepts and techniques used by artists like Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, et al. The Post-Impressionists were interested in color and shape as well as the artists initial impression of the image they were going to paint. So the techniques were more fluid and at times abstract. This class is designed to give individualized attention to all students, at all levels, from beginner to advanced. If you have never learned to draw, or if you have been drawing for years, you will advance your skills in this class. Drawing is the foundation for many art forms. Mastering the five basic drawing skills will enable you to draw for life, and enhance your ability to work in a variety of media. Acrylics is the medium, but the lessons cover a myriad of concepts and formats. Students will plan and paint pictures using color theory, composition, and techniques of application from washes to layered paints using knives, brushes, and odds and ends. First, we'll study composition by looking at pictures from the past, and then we'll include the elements of design to create artful pictures. We'll experiment with different surfaces including stretched paper, boards, and canvases. Each class will focus on a specific topic: composition, materials, color theory, elements of design, and light, shade, and tone. Students are encouraged to come with a free spirit, and heart for art; it'll be fun. All levels welcome. Min/max: 4 to 8 $100

We'll make a beautiful stained glass window using lead came, in the traditional technique, or work on a more complex piece in the Tiffany copper foil method. Students will work with glass and lead safely, cut and fit, solder, and apply finishing treatments. Prerequisite: beginning stained glass class or be comfortable cutting glass. You'll upgrade your basic skills, including cutting, soldering, and finishing. Use of tools and materials included, but each student will need to purchase glass separately, available in class. Experience the fun and joy of oil painting with the new water mixable oils! This class is designed for beginning oil painters. You'll learn to mix any color using the three primary colors, plus black and white. Learn how to do the 'Daily Warmup' and other tips and techniques. Brushes, canvas panels, paints and palette knife are yours to take home. The entire painting process, from idea to final touch, will be demonstrated. Luckily there is an easy way to use watercolors that is fun and effective for sketching and more. Record your impressions on location, keep a travel journal, make studies, create finished paintings. Create your own customized silver ring in this fun workshop. We’ll practice basic bench skills, and see how soldering, oxidization and polish finishing can add beautiful details to simple projects. This is a great foundation for beginning to work in silversmithing. Min/max: 4 to 6 $65

Instructor: Colleen Russell This class is for students who are hungry to express themselves creatively, but feel they lack the skills. You will learn how to paint with acrylics by following your intuition. What’s important is that you come with an open and playful mind. No skills are necessary. Instructor: Titina Zuberbuhler Create a custom gift for someone special and learn about silver etching! We’ll begin with a basic silver shape and turn it into a custom pendant. We’ll learn about the materials used, various design details and how to finish the piece. Min/max: 4 to 8 $65
Instructor: Jacqueline Rickard What better to do in the fall than make pine needle baskets, with local materials? We'll make beautiful pine needle baskets using ponderosa pine needles and imitation sinew. Students will learn about the materials and how to prepare ad finish each basket. The baskets are small, approximately 3" in diameter, and each one has a lid. Min/max: 4 to 10 $45

In this class, participants will take magazine images and intuitively put together artful images that represent aspects of the self. Facilitator: Mark Kubiak This is a group of intermediate to advanced artists, working together to share ideas, inspiration and technique. No instruction. We'll work figuratively, drawing &/or sculpting from a live model. Cost is $10 per night for models. Must be a current Arts Alliance member. Space is limited; each night is first come, first serve. Days & times vary Hone your pottery skills with practice on the wheel! With a studio pass, you will have access to the pottery wheels and clay tools. Students will attend a brief studio orientation session. Purchase your own clay; we will give you a shelf for storage. Firing & glazing is available, and the cost will vary depending on your load. Monday - Thursday, 10 am to 3 pm and some evenings, depending on other classes. Call for exact times. $50.
Want to work independently on your own stained glass window? With a studio pass, you will have access to the grinder, soldering irons and other tools. Work at Skeleton Key Art Glass, with access to instruction, glass and other supplies. (Supplies not included.) Arrange your schedule with glass instructor Sara McTavish. Prerequisite: beginning or advanced stained glass class. $75
