Enrollment:  You can sign up online, over the phone, or with a check. Preregistration is required, deadline is at least ONE WEEK PRIOR to class starting.  Click on the titles below for a full description, instructor, price and location. Most supplies are included in class cost.  Arts Alliance members receive a 10% discount on classes. To join, visit the MEMBERSHIP page. 

Cancellations:  If you cancel less than one week prior to the start of class for any reason, we refund your payment minus a $25 processing fee.  We do not offer a refund if you do not attend classes. Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment may be cancelled and 100% of your payment will be refunded. 

The Studio: Classes and workshops are held at the Arts Alliance Studio, unless otherwise indicated.  The studio is at 518 Oak Street in Sandpoint, Idaho, on the corner of 6th & Oak.  Coming from the north on Hwy 95, go through the stoplight at Cedar, and take a right at the next block - that's Oak St.  Go one block and it's on your right, past the Panhandle Animal Shelter Thrift Store.

Instructors: All Arts Alliance instructors have previous experience teaching art, and are professionals in their field.  Many have taught with the organization since the first session in October 2006. All instructors are selected from a pool of applicants. Beginning Drama (ages 8-13)      Mondays, 3:30-5 pm       April 28 - May 26, 2008

This spirited, fun course is designed for children who want to discover their inner actor/actress.  The classes will explore character expression, theater arts warm-up exercises, creative performance games, and basic short-form scene work.  Please bring any costumes, scarves, hats and stage props to enhance your stage work, plus water and snacks.  Min/max: 4 to 8                $35

Working with experienced students, we will be training actors to respond imaginatively, emotionally, intellectually, and physically in the moment, to others and to the script.  Classes in speech, voice, movement, acting, and some play writing are taught continuously throughout this advanced course.  This two-session class will culminate in a performance at The Studio.  Please bring water and snacks.  Price includes costumes. Min/max: 4 to 8    $115.

Cartooning         Wednesdays, 3:30-5 pm          April 30-May 28
Instructor: Rob Goldworm                     at The Studio, 518 Oak St.

WThis class is for kids who love to draw cartoons.  We'll explore new drawing techniques and enhance your personal style.  Learn different styles of comics, invent your own characters, draw the ones you love, create storyboards and more.  Bring your drawing supplies.  We'll share our great comics and have fun!  Min/max: 5 to 15.    $35.

Wool Felt Handcrafting (Ages 6-adult)           Thursdays, 3:30-5pm, May 1-27Wool Felt Handcrafting

Instructor:  Susan Morton                               at The Studio, 518 Oak St.
Children love to hand sew and create with natural wool.  Handwork improves fine motor skills and concentration.  We’ll continue to work with wool in this class through wet felting projects and add to our knowledge base of  sewing stitches.  Students will create all new projects from previous sessions during this 5 week class.  Min/max: 4 to 8      $35.

Garden Art Projects          Saturdays, 10-12:30 pm        May 3-June 7; no class May 24
Instructor: Lynn Guier                 Ages 11-adult          at the Studio, 518 Oak St.Garden Art
We'll make some great projects for the garden, including stepping stones, batik & dye garden flags, and ceramic tile signs.  Learn the basics of mosaic, and the various methods available.  If you have been saving up any broken dishes & tiles, feel free to bring them along.  We'll also make beautiful fabric flags in the ancient wax resist technique.  To label plat beds, we'll create and fire handmade clay signs.  All supplies included.  Kids ages 11 & up welcome, as well as adults; ages 11-15 must be accompanied by an adult.  Min/max: 4 to 8             $95 adults; $65 youth

Figure Drawing       Mondays, 6-8:30 pm, April 28-June 2, no class May 5

Instructor: Mark Kubiak                                 at The Studio, 518 Oak St.

Thisfigure drawing class is in open studio format, drawing from a live (unclothed) model.  Practice learning proportions and anatomy using a variety of materials. Develop an eye for drawing the figure in perspective, describing volumes.  Bring your sketchbook and drawing pencils. Min/max: 4 to 10    $90

Photography Techniques - May (Session V)         Tuesdays, 6-8 pm      May 6, 13 & 20, plus Sat the 17th (time TBA)

Instructor: Marsha Lutz                                  at The Studio, 518 Oak St.

This class is for beginning photographers using either film or digital cameras, who wish to gain an understanding of photographing in manual mode. Students will need to have a camera equipped with manual settings and an interchangeable lens (SLR). We'll learn the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography, including f-shops, shutter speeds, lighting and the basics of composition. The second week, we’ll spend time shooting on Saturday.  Bring your camera. Min/max: 4 to 6    $75.

Adult Theatre Improv & Scene Study             Wednesdays, 6-8:30 pm     April 30 - May 28

Instructor: Gordon Holmes                   at The Studio, 518 Oak

Fun! We'll do improv games to get rolling, and then dive into scenes from unusual plays.  Taught by NY actor Gordon Holmes (http://gordonholmes.com).  This is great theatre with a spunky, spicy twist!  All creative types and writers welcome.  This may lead to more theatre productions with the Arts Alliance, coming this fall.   Min/max: 4 to 8   $50.

Pottery Studio Pass           Mon & Wed, see below for times.  March 10 – April 18

Hone your pottery skills with practice on the wheel! With a studio pass, you will have access to the pottery wheels and clay tools.  Students will attend a brief Studio Orientation Session by Daryl Baird, Ceramics Instructor (date TBA).  Purchase your own clay; we will give you a shelf for storage.  Firing & glazing is available, and the cost will vary depending on your load.  The studio will be available Monday & Wednesdays, 9 am until 5 pm.                 $45.

Understanding Portraiture                            Thursdays, 10 am-12:30 pm, May 1-29

This class is designed for the student who seeks to understand portraiture.  In this class, we will work on disciplined observation and an understanding of the anatomy of the face and head.  We will concentrate on the basic grammar of drawing with pastel/charcoal from a photo and a model.  Although individual style and interpretation may be a student's ultimate goal, these classes will focus more on the general structure, proportions and characteristics of the face and head.  Min/max:  5 to 10    $95

Jewelry / Silversmithing         Thursdays, 6:30-8 pm        May 1-29
Instructor: Titina Van Hoorn Zuberbuhler               at The Studio, 518 Oak

Jewelry SilversmithingThis class will introduce you to basic jewelry / silversmithing techniques through personally designed pieces. In the first project, we’ll explore the “lost wax” casting technique.  Each student will design and make a wax for casting in sterling silver.  The next project will introduce students to simple bench techniques, including soldering, piercing and filing, and you’ll design a simple ring or pendant. If time permits, the final project will include etching as a surface decoration.  All tools and supplies included. Bring a sketchbook. Min/max: 4 to 8                          $195.

Beginning Stained Glass                 Saturdays, 10 am – 12:30         May 3-31
Instructor: Sara McTavish                 at Skeleton Key Art Glass, 1223 Michigan St. Suite B
Stained GlassDesign and fabricate a stained glass panel in the Tiffany copper foil method. We'll learn techniques including cutting, grinding, applying foil, and soldering. Complete a finished stained glass panel to hang in the window!  Equipment and supplies provided, but purchase your own glass separately.  Glass is available in class. Includes $50 supply fee. Min/max: 4 to 6   $100.

Advanced Stained Glass          Saturdays, 1-3:30 pm        May 3-31
Instructor: Sara McTavish                 For adults ages 17+          at Skeleton Key Art Glass, 1223 Michigan St. Suite B
We’ll make a beautiful stained glass window using lead came, in the traditional technique, or work on a more complex piece in the Tiffany copper foil method.  Students will work with glass and lead safely, cut and fit, solder, and apply finishing treatments. We ask that you are comfortable cutting glass or have taken the beginning class first.  You’ll upgrade your basic stained glass skills, including cutting, soldering, and finishing.  Use of tools and materials included, but each student will need to purchase glass separately, available in class.   Min/max: 4 to 6             $120.

Drawing is the foundation for many art forms.  Mastering the five basic drawing skills will enable you to draw for life, and enhance your ability to work in a variety of media.  In this class you will learn perception of edges, spaces, relationships, light and shadow, and gestalt.  Apply these skills to your work and have fun doing it!  Bring a sketchbook and drawing pencils.  Min/max:  5 to 12            $90.
